A city of Soviet influences and high class cultural facilities, Minsk is a place where the Era of the former Soviet Union comes back alive with its monuments, architecture, and bureaucracy. The yet undiscovered Belarusian capital is a place where the new blends with the old, creating a unique attraction over this city of nearly two million inhabitants.

Minsk, a Soviet style city with high class opera and ballet

The capital and the biggest city of Belarus, Minsk is a center of economy and transportation in Belarus. Thinking of tourism, Minsk is not a popular travel destination. However, the unique cityscape of this Central Belarusian riverside city attracts foreign visitors that are keen to see old Soviet architecture. Much of the city was destroyed during the bombings of the Second World War and rebuilt by Stalin in the 1950s, which is why the cityscape of Minsk is an excellent showroom of colossal Soviet style architecture. Travel to Minsk and you will feel in many ways as if the Soviet Union has never collapsed. The Soviet nostalgia is easily experienced by walking around in the city where statues of Lenin still stand and you can end up with places such as the former KGB building or subway stations devoted to Communist Revolution or to famous Soviet leaders. Another relic from the Soviet Era is the unexceptionally high quality cultural scene of the city with ballet and opera in Minsk to be admired.

As most big cities of the former Soviet Union, Minsk also has its green side. The most popular recreation spot of the city is the artificial Minsk Sea that is surrounded by beaches and parks. The city also hosts the main zoo in Belarus and some spa facilities. If you come during the winter, try ice skating, which is particularly popular outdoor sport in Minsk where you can even skate in front of the National Palace. There is always of course the excitement of shopping in Minsk to be experienced as well.
