Note, however, that roads in Guyana are generally in bad condition and the road network is limited outside the coastal areas. Georgetown is an English-speaking and small city destination where you can get around quite easily.
Safety. As in most South American and Caribbean cities, safety issues should be paid attention to while visiting Georgetown. Drugs and petty crime can cause problems here every now and then. However, risks are much lower if you follow safety instructions such as avoiding walking in the city alone, especially after dark, and keeping your valuables hidden and car doors locked when driving in Georgetown. Other than that, especially southern suburbs and the areas of Stabroek Market and Tiger bay should be avoided.
Weather. Georgetown enjoys a tropical climate with steady 30 degree Celsius temperatures, but as the city is located on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, the weather in Georgetown is rarely unbearably hot due to cooling breezes blowing from the sea. Georgetown meets two rainy seasons annually, of which the first is between May and August, and the other between November and January. The best time to travel to Georgetown is outside these two rainy periods, when flooding and heavy afternoon thunderstorms often cause unpleasant conditions in the Guyanan capital.
