History of Vietnam in brief

Vietnam has been home to historical empires for several thousands of years. It has been colonized by China several times during its long history. Conquered by France in the 19th century, Vietnam is a former part of the French Indochina, a period that lasted until the Second World War when Vietnam regained its independence after a war against the French colonists. Soon after this, Vietnam was divided into two parts: the communist North Vietnam and the capitalist South Vietnam, which was united into the Socialist Republic of Vietnam after the long civil war in the 1960s and 1970s, when American troops were also fighting in Vietnam to support the South. Today, Vietnam has slowly recovered from the devastating wars and is becoming an important economic power in the region.
