Five star hotels are available, but you can just as well stay in cheap hostels or mountain cottages. The same goes also for restaurants: Everything from gourmet to fast food is available in local restaurants, which are influenced by Italian, Balkan and Hungarian food cultures.

Nightlife in Slovenia is best available in Ljubljana, but as the Slovenes are an outgoing nation, you will probably have no problem finding suitable places for nightlife elsewhere, either. What is even better, Slovenia is one of the places where walking around is quite safe also after dark. The biggest safety risk in this Central European country is traffic. Apart from occasional pickpockets and the natural risks of high mountain areas, Slovenia is a quite safe destination.

From under Yugoslavian rule to independence: A spoonful of Slovenian history

Once part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Slovenes joined the Serbs and Croats in forming a new state, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia after the first World War. Yugoslavia became a socialist state after the Italian and German occupation in World War II. The days of Yugoslavia continued until 1991, when the former Kingdom was split into smaller states of which Slovenia came to be one. After its independence, Slovenia has joined both NATO and the European Union in 2004. Today, Slovenia remains the wealthiest of the former Yugoslavian republics.
