Two sunny islands where you can relax on sandy beaches with your eyes resting on the turquoise horizon of the Caribbean Sea, Saint Kitts and Nevis are a good, quiet destination for a holiday in the sun. If you are interested in water sports, there is an array of possibilities available from kayaking and fishing to sailing, snorkelling and diving in St Kitts and Nevis.

Nature and sports. Another thing these volcanic islands are good for is adventurous trekking on Saint Kitts and Nevis, for which purpose the most popular destination is the highest point of Saint Kitts, Mount Liamuiga, which rises up to the altitude of 1,156 m / 3,793 ft. The loops of this volcano offer some rock climbing experiences and introduce you to the diverse landscape of St. Kitts from sugarcane fields to dense rainforests, which are populated by the famous monkeys of Saint Kitts.

The history of Saint Kitts and Nevis also has interesting attractions to offer. Sharing both English and French heritage, the islands host some interesting colonial sites. The main historical attraction of Saint Kitts is the Brimstone Hill Fortress Park, which is an UNESCO World heritage Site of historical, cultural and architectural significance. For other culturally and historically interesting attractions, visit the capital of St Kitts, Basseterre. The capital of the quieter island of Nevis, Charlestown is also worth a visit. The popular St Kitts Carnival is held between late December and January, and there are also several other festivals on both islands to visit.

Practical information for your trip to Saint Kitts and Nevis

A pair of tropical islands in the Eastern Caribbean region, Saint Kitts and Nevis is best reached by air. The main airport of the islands is located in Basseterre, St Kitts, and offers flights to Saint Kitts and Nevis from for instance Miami, New York and Atlanta. Once you have made it to St Kitts, travelling around is easy. There is a regular ferry between the two islands, taxis and buses are widely available, car rental on Saint Kitts and Nevis is offered, and even a scenic railroad is available for sightseeing.

Weather. Saint Kitts and Nevis enjoy tropical climate with little seasonal variation. Average monthly high temperatures on the islands are around 28–30⁰C throughout the year, and it is rare for the mercury to drop below 25⁰C.

Usually, the period between November and February is the driest time of the year, but for travelling to Saint Kitts and Nevis also other months outside the hurricane season, which lasts from June to November, are quite all right.

Visitor services. Even though they are not among the most popular choices for holiday destination in the Caribbean, St Kitts & Nevis have recently increased its popularity as a travel destination. The more popular of the two islands is Saint Kitts, as Nevis is a better choice for peace and silence loving visitors. As for hotels on St Kitts and Nevis, you can choose between luxury resorts and quiet small inns. One thing bars and restaurants on Saint Kitts and Nevis are famous of is local rum, which you can enjoy anywhere on the islands.

Safety. Saint Kitts has better choices for nightlife and shopping than Nevis, and even though neither of the islands is particularly dangerous place to visit, the smaller Nevis is a bit safer than St Kitts. On both islands you should avoid isolated areas after dark and keep your valuables hidden.

Short history of St Kitts & Nevis

Once inhabited by the indigenous Kalinago people, St Kitts and Nevis were the first islands in the Caribbean to be colonized by British and French settlers. This happened in the early 1600s. After centuries of French and British rule, the islands became a self-governing part of the United Kingdom in 1967, only to gain full independence 16 years later. Today, Saint Kitts and Nevis are the smallest independent state in the Western Hemisphere.
