Free of mass tourism. Moldova is not one of the most popular travel destinations on earth, but more like a country suitable for those seeking new experiences or wanting to explore the traditional East European lifestyle and rural landscapes completely free of mass tourism. Except for the northeastern separatist area of Transdnistria that should be avoided, Moldova is a quite safe travel destination. However, normal caution procedures should be followed when traveling to Moldova.

Short history of Moldova

Moldova has been populated by Slavonic tribes for centuries. Formerly belonging to the historical state of Moldavia and later Romania, Moldova became a part of the Soviet Union after the Second World War. This period ended in independence, achieved in 1991 when the Soviet Union collapsed. However, independence has not been easy for Moldovans. The eastern region of Transdnistria broke away from Moldova with help of Russian military in 1992, and still retains communist rule and close ties to Russia. Today, Moldova remains largely an agricultural country and one of the poorest countries in Europe.
