History and culture of Guam

Guam has been inhabited around 3,500 years. The Chamorro people are the indigenous inhabitants of the island. The first Europeans came to Guam in the 16th century and the island was conquered by the Spanish in 1565. After being a colony of Spain, Guam has been ruled by the United States of America since 1898. The area was invaded by the Japanese in 1941, but they were soon defeated and the island was retaken by US forces in 1944. Today, Guam serves as one of the most important US military bases on the Pacific Ocean, and the island is an unincorporated territory of the United States.
