French Polynesia

en españolen français

Located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and surrounded by thousands of miles of open water, French Polynesian archipelago is a remote place for most of us. In coordination with their remote location, the ideal weather, the astonishing beaches and mountainous nature of the French Polynesian islands such as Tahiti and Bora Bora make them an ideal place for a tropical beach holiday as far from your everyday surroundings as possible.

French Polynesia, tropical holiday islands with lush nature

French Polynesia consists of 118 South Pacific islands, the best known of which is Tahiti. Lovely tropical island located in the Society Islands group, Tahiti is the choice of those looking for tropical surroundings full of natural beauty, but with a multitude of services and entertainment facilities available. Tahiti hosts the capital city of French Polynesia, Papeete. The island of Moorea near Tahiti is also becoming popular as a travel destination.

Another tropical wonderland, Bora Bora is a scenic island surrounded by thousands of miles of open Pacific Ocean. The white-sand beaches and the turquoise water of Bora Bora lagoon make this island an enjoyable beach holiday resort with diverse quality services available, but yet with more privacy and less entertainment services available than on Tahiti.

For a tropical getaway into an island with beautiful tropical nature boosted with peace and silence plus excellent beach holiday sites for scuba divers, you can also choose Tuamotu Islands, remote atolls that are best known for their pearls production. Another remote French Polynesian island group that has remained untouched by tourism, Marquesas Islands are a quiet and mountainous destination with wild horses and unspoiled green nature.

However, the area is a popular tourism destination that is easily reached from many corners of the world. The main airport of French Polynesia is located in Tahiti's capital Papeete, receiving flights from Tokyo, Osaka, Los Angeles, New York, Auckland, Sydney, Paris and Santiago De Chile. There are ferries and domestic flights available for moving around between the islands.

Public transport is most efficient on the islands of Tahiti and Moorea, which are the two most populated islands of French Polynesia. With the notable exception of Papeete, French Polynesia is a safe travel destination where crime is practically an unknown matter. However, there are some occasional nature disasters such as January cyclones threatening the safe surroundings of these islands. English is not commonly spoken on the islands outside the main tourism areas. French Polynesia is a quite expensive destination as most products need to be imported here.

History in brief. Settled for almost 1500 years, the French Polynesian islands have a diverse and multidimensional history. These diverse island groups with Polynesian culture were unified in 1889 when the islands were officially nominated a French protectorate. A few decades later, in 1946, French Polynesians were granted French citizenship, making the islands an overseas territory of France. Today, many French people have also immigrated to the islands, especially to Tahiti.
