Lucerne city centre and Old Town are compact enough to be toured on foot, but you migh consider car rental in Lucerne if you want to visit other destinations in Central Switzerland. There are several car rental agencies in the city centre, or you can rent a car at Zürich Airport. There are excellent roads in Switzerland, and traffic is usually quite fluent. Note that if your car does not have a motorway tax paid sticker, you will be charged heavily for driving even a short distance on a Swiss motorway. Driving is on the right.
