The major center of alpine skiing in Sweden, Åre is located close to the magnificent Mt. Åreskutan in Jämtland. The highest peak is at 1420 meters. Are had the honor of hosting the Alpine World Championships in 1954 and 2007. There are great opportunities for snowboarding and skiing in Åre. There is an excellent system of ski lifts in the area and there are slopes for all abilities. You can also go on dogsled tours, ice fishing or snowmobiling tours in Åre.

Natural & cultural attractions. Apart from outdoor activities Åre region offers much to see and do. The largest waterfall in Sweden, Tännforsen is a must see both in summer and in winter, when there are beautiful ice formations in the waterfall. To get in touch with the aboriginal people of Are, the Sami people, visit the Narka Sami Camp near lake Häggsjön. It is here you can learn about the Sami history and see reindeer. Visit also the beautiful small Åre Church in the centre of the village. What comes to the shopping in Åre you can find many small shops in the village and buy for example beautiful Sami handicraft.

The winters from December to March are usually cold with plenty of snow. Summmers are relatively cool with variable climate.

How to get there. Åre has good connections from several destinations in Sweden and Europe. The distance from the nearest airport in Öresund is approximately 80 km. The seat of the municipality is Järpen. You can travel to Åre by buses and trains from many cities in Sweden, including Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö. There are direct flights to Åre from Stockholm, and charter flights from London, Copenhagen, Moscow and Helsinki.

Local transport. A ski bus runs between Åre and the nearby villages of Duved, Tegefjäll and Björnen. Car rental in Åre is a good option if you want to travel to other destinations in Sweden on your own. The roads in Sweden are in excellent condition, but beware of elks and reindeer on the roads.
